My field assignment Essay
a) My field assignment took place in one of the elevators of Jackson Medical Center. I chose this place because every Saturday morning I have to go there from 7:00am- 2:30pm for my clinical. I also selected this place because hospitals are constantly full of people, meaning I would be interacting and assessing the reaction towards my behavior of more people. I was accompanied by another student from my clinical rotation, Martha; who was responsible for observing the reaction and behaviors of the people. Moreover, she would act like a total stranger to me, like we had never met before. Martha and I wore professional-casual attire. We are not allowed by the school of to wear scrubs in the Psych floor instead we get to wear regular clothes. The rational behind it is to maintain the studentââ¬â¢s safety as well as the clientââ¬â¢s behavior to be maintained as calm as possible while interacts with the student. Lab coats tend to alter the clientââ¬â¢s behavior. The elevator I chose was the closest to the main entrance. It was a sunny day, which was wonderful for me because lots of people decided to come and visit their relatives, family members, and friends, among others. One of the benefits for having selected this place of service is that I was able to interact with people of different ages group. b) I tried to be closed by the elevator to see the kind of people entering it. Also, I tried to be the last one boarding the elevator and once I was inside I would close the door to impede the entrance of more people, otherwise, the assignment would not be successful. I would choose one particular individual and I be staring at herself. Moreover, I looked at the chosen person as a whole. I observed at her hair, clothes, shoes, purse, etc. For instance, I would put my hands in my pockets and try to make noises with my keys. The noises helped increase the tension of the individual while I kept looking at her. c) As I was breaking the norm, I was feeling a little uncomfortable and I was nervous at the same time. I had never thought about doing this in my life. This event was frightening from both sides. One, I was being exposed to them to be able to do something to me. Second, it was terrifying to them what I was doing. They did not know what was happening in my mind, or if I was a psychopath or a serial killer. Unfortunately, we are living in a petrifying world and more people are being diagnosed with a mentally ill disorder every day, or killing each other out of nothing. d) As I mentioned before, my behavior was fear provoking to them. They did not know what I wanted. Why was Ià looking at the in such uncomfortable way. Most tried to fix their hair thinking there was something wrong with it. For instance, they cleaned their face like if it was dirty. Others fixed their clothes or looked in their purses. Others pretended to look at the numbers on the top of the doorââ¬â¢s elevator to see how fast was it moving. My friend says, they tried to engage eye contact with her, making her eye signals, advising her of what was happening but she took her phone out and pretended that she was texting somebody. At the same time, Martha moved to the front of the elevator, giving me the space in where she was standing while I would gather a better visualization of the individual. e) I believe this exercise has served to prove that social norms still important for our society. Since we are little, we are being taught these norms and how not to break them. It was a difficult event, as a woman, its really difficult especially at the beginning just to ride on an elevator to stare at people. We normally get in an elevator but people donââ¬â¢t look at each other. I also believe most of us try to live by the ââ¬Å"normsâ⬠to avoid the use of social sanctions and they important part they play on how we carry ourselves in society now a days. I did this task because it was an assignment from school. However, I donââ¬â¢t see myself repeating this event ever again. The feeling of breaking the norms the way I did in an elevator is it very scary. I really would not know how to react towards such uncomfortable behavior.

Effects of Music on the Unborn Child
Music can be used to influence peopleââ¬â¢s mood and has been used to attempt to affect the brain of a child in its motherââ¬â¢s womb. Some people think that having an unborn child listen to different types of music will have different effects on how the child will grow. Some people believe that music has no influence while others believe that if they introduce their unborn child to classical music the baby will grow up to be smarter than the kid who either listened to other types of music or no music while in the womb. Studies have been done on how music can affect an unborn, and many different results have come from these studies. Not only can the unborn child actually hear the music, but the child will remember the song even after they are born. ?Music affects attitudes as well as thoughts. According to the book titled What to Listen for in Music by Aaron Copland, there are four elements of music: rhythm, melody, harmony, and tone color. Each of these elements are not heard by themselves but are heard together as one sound. Each part of music has a special and unique way wherewith we interpret and react to it. Rhythm comes first in the musical elements because many historians say that music started with a beating of a rhythm. Whether it was the cavemen with branches or another group rhythm was the first element of music found (Copland, 33). The second element, melody, is second because rhythm is more of a physical motion and so melody is experienced as a mental emotion. The melody is the most crucial part of the music. It is the only subjective portion of music that the audience rejects or accepts by itself (Copland, 49). Harmony, the third element, is the most sophisticated. The harmony was the most recently discovered and has been greatly appreciated (Copland, 61). The last element, tone color, is the quality of sound produced by a particular musical instrument (Copland, 78). Aaron Copland later goes on to explain the difference of how we listen to music now compared to how we listened when we were in the womb. We have little to no say in what we listen to when we were in the womb; we can only enjoy it or kick relentlessly hoping that it will change. ?Some studies have been done by David Tame in his book The Secret Power of Music. In it he says ââ¬Å"music has been found to affect the body in two distinct ways, directly on the cells and organs and indirectly by affecting the emotions, which, in turn, influence numerous bodily processes. Sounds projected into liquid media have coagulated proteins. So teenagers have brought soft eggs to rock concerts, hich became hard-boiled ââ¬â wonder what happens in our own bodiesâ⬠(Tame, 173) After reading this, it does make one wonder why we listen to something that can have such a negative effect and be so bad. Most people chose music their parents raised them on or something completely different. Tame later says in his book that people who listen to rock music have led lives that were much more destructive to themselves and to others than people who had listened to classical music. David Tame also did studies on plants and animals and how they respond to the different music. In a study performed classical music had appeared to bring more produce and better looking flowers than rock music (Tame, 196). ?According to BBC, Dr. Lamont did a study where the same song was played for the last three months of the pregnancy and then was played again after the child was born, even after they were a year old they recognized the song (BBC, Womb Music: How Will Music Affect oner Unborn Child? ). Another study done by Dr. Lamont concluded that ââ¬Å"that there was no evidence that playing classical music to babies helps to make their brains develop. Dr. Lamont has done many studies for this topic and could be considered an expert. She has discovered much information for example: babies can hear just twenty weeks after conception and can remember a song for at least twelve months, and that babies cannot only remember the songs but they prefer these songs (BBC, Babies Remember womb music). ?Another study was done at the Education Oasis on how music affects babies in the womb, and they said that music does not make a baby smarter but it does prepare it for particular ways of thinking. The effect the music has does not last long but can be used to do tasks more quickly (Bales). They figured out, through many experiments, that although music did not make the babies smarter it did make their brains ready to learn and grow. The babies who listened to classical music were more ready to learn than the babies, who had listened to country, rock, folk, dance, or nothing at all (Bales). ?Although there is still controversy on whether or not music can make the brain smarter or not, more research has been done to observe the effects of music on newborns. Researchers from Brigham Oneng University studied the effects of music on thirty-three premature infants in the neonatal intensive care unit at Utah Valley Regional Medical Center in Provo. Cassette players piped voices of men and women singing lullabies into each babyââ¬â¢s ears for forty minutes a day for four days. When doctors examined the babies on the fourth day, they found that babies who had been exposed to music gained more weight, and had lower blood pressure and a stronger heartbeat than the other (Robledo). Their research shows that music can help strengthen premature babies; however, these researchers still have yet to figure out if music can improve a childââ¬â¢s intellect. It is hard to study the intelligence level of babies when they cannot talk or write. When studying three and four year olds these researchers have found out that if the child plays an instrument that the child is better at math and special thinking (Robledo). ââ¬Å"Oner goal should be to cultivate a love for music in oner child, not to create the next Mozart. It should be about having fun and exposing oner child to new sounds and rhythmsâ⬠(Robledo). My mother listened to two genres of music when I was in her womb: eighties rock and R&B. I would kick and dance for her when she played the rock music and she used R&B to put me to sleep. It worked as a oneng child too; my mother has videos of me kicking and screaming for joy when she played AC/DC, Bon Jovi, the Beastie Boys, Duran Duran, Journey, Whitesnake, and U2. Whenever either of my parents wanted to put me to sleep, they would play Prince, Stevie Wonder, Al B. Sure, Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, Soul II Soul, or Earth, Wind, and Fire. These genres have had an impact on my upbringing. Like most children I stuck to what I knew when it came for me to buy my first compact disk. The quote ââ¬Å"The apple doesnââ¬â¢t fall far from the treeâ⬠applies very much so to me as it does to most children when they pick what they like and what they do not; I chose a nineties rock and alternative. I liked bands that were like the bands that I listened to in my motherââ¬â¢s womb, but I also liked having my own music to like. The music I chose sounds similar to the music my mother would have me listen to, but it was something my dad would not sing every word to, so I liked it. My dad is not the best singer, so if I can only get a hum then my music is more enjoyable. ?A year or two later, my mother was pregnant again. This time she was told by the doctors that her baby was to be born with many brain defects. She looked for many ways to keep her unborn baby from being born with the brain deficiencies. She had watched on the local news that babies were being born with an unbelievable intelligence from their mothers playing classical music while the unborn baby was still in the womb. There was another mother whom had said that the doctors had told her that her baby was supposed to be born with brain efects but her baby was born with no defects at all and she thanked her lucky stars on classical music. My mother thought it was worth a try since music was not thought of to hurt a babyââ¬â¢s brain. While she had classical music on headphone around her womb, she had rock music on a second pair for her and me to enjoy. My brother was born with some brain deficiencies; he is a slow school learner but is extremely fast at learning musical instruments. If one gives him an instrument in five minutes he will learn how to compose sound, in fifteen he knows notes, and in thirty he can play a song from memory. In everything else my brother is slow at learning and is slightly dyslexic. My mother thought the classical music had helped, so when she was pregnant again she had the new unborn baby listen to classical music as well. This one was born with terrible eye sight, deaf in one ear, dyslexic, and on the verge of being mentally handicapped. Classical music through a personal study has shown to have no intellectual effect on the unborn child. Every now and again a ââ¬Å"musical geniusâ⬠is born. These children are extremely gifted in music and can play, compose and understand music with an unimaginable capacity. Although, some may imagine that we cannot measure musical greatness or potential in children before they discover it themselves. There is a way. In the book titled Musical Ability in Children by Arnold Bentley, he describes ways that we can test the musical ability and potential in children. After all, he says ââ¬Å"musical ability is primarily a mental ability. â⬠He goes on to tell how to test children, but he says that this can be a difficult task especially if the children are not old enough to handle the challenge of the tests (Bentley). According to these studies, there are too many variables to consider when having a child and exposing them to the different array of music that we have today. For example, the child may be born already a genius and the classical music could impair his way of thinking, there are also some disabilities a child can be born with that music just will not be the fix, the baby may reject the music altogether because the baby still remembers what has happened before in the premortal life and knows that he should be listening to a different type or knows a better type for him to listen to. Music is a stimulant. We listen to it in hard times either to make us feel better or to truly understand what the artists are saying because now we understand what they mean. We try to understand everything that we listen to, but it is sometime hard to pick up the message the artists wanted to get out in the way they present it. Music is a powerful thing that should not be taken lightly it can create emotions and pictures in our mind. Music is not something that goes away either. Once one hears a song it can be stuck in oneââ¬â¢s mind for a very long time. Even after many years of not hearing the song it can still come back to the front of oneââ¬â¢s mind, much faster than a memory. Music is power, and to play it to unborn children increases the parentââ¬â¢s power over the child by what the parents choose which music to produce for the child.
Ethnocentrism Hinders Effective Cross-Cultural Dialogue and Common Understanding Essay
As human beings, we are inherently biased in our judgment of issues and others- by others I mean those who do not belong in the same socio-cultural group we ascribe to. Our inborn predilection to take a subjective view of reality leads to the common-and equally incorrect- assumption that we are right in our ways, while ââ¬Ëothersââ¬â¢ are wrong in theirs. This tendency of biased notions of cultural superiority in relation to other cultures is what political scientist William G. Sumner (1906) summed up with the coinage of the term ââ¬Ëethnocentrism. ââ¬â¢ By definition, ethnocentrism is the tendency by individuals to believe, unconsciously and through false assumptions, that their culture is better than that of others. Notably, there is a running thread of collective concurrence among whites that ââ¬Ëwe westernersââ¬â¢, with our western civilization and attendant lifestyles, are superior to the backward races of Africa, which we conveniently label a jungle of savagery. The negative effects of ethnocentrism are manifest in international relations, where effective intercultural communication is hampered by cultural differences and culture transitional challenges (Moran, Harris and Moran, 2007, 265). Nonetheless, to avoid collective generalizations by claiming that it is ââ¬Ëwe westernersââ¬â¢ rather than ââ¬ËI, me and myself,ââ¬â¢ who suffers this cultural prejudice- a claim by which I unwittingly admit my ethnocentric conditioning to include fellow tribesmen in my narrow worldview corner- I hereby set out to examine how I have severally paid homage to this populist bandwagon of cultural subjectivity in judgment. Finally, I will outline the course of remedy I have chartered to liberate myself from the blinding ignorance of ethnocentrism. Was it me, really, now that Iââ¬â¢m thinking from a relatively wider perspective? Late last year, I accompanied a close friend of mine from Saudi Arabia (whom I will not disclose for the pang of guilt that gnaws at my conscience) to pick some forms from our embassy. Well, it seems that since September 11, a kind of phobia for our Muslim brothers has eaten into our national psych. At a personal level, I always change lanes every time I meet one donning a flowing white garb andâ⬠¦. err, an unusually long beard. Anyway, the security man at the embassy just ran the metal detector over my body and patted me on the back. But when it was my friendââ¬â¢s turn, the security guy, perhaps seeing Osamaââ¬â¢s ghosts, took a deep breath and started what was the most rigorous personal search I had ever witnessed. He yanked the garb from the underside and ran the detector inch by inch, grinned with relief upon finding nothing (read bombs) and then allowed him to pass through. However, the issue here is not the security manââ¬â¢s exaggerated fears, but the fact that I took it as normal, without bothering to question why it wasnââ¬â¢t. The culture I grew up in had taught me to regard some religions as being synonymous with terrorism, and to dismiss others as pagan idolatry and pure superstition. In my evaluation of world religions, Iââ¬â¢m often tempted to associate Islam with terrorism, a belief that is largely fed by media stereotyping in relation to incidences of suicide bombings. As for most traditional African religions, customs and rituals, I always found ââ¬Ëevidenceââ¬â¢ to dismiss them as the demonic chants of a pagan charlatan. Their polygamy I considered the ways of an uncivilized society that still harbors the wild cavemanââ¬â¢s genes. On this score, my blindness was informed by the western glorification of the nuclear family unit, which greatly contrasts with other culturesââ¬â¢ recognition of the unifying aspect of extended families and kinship systems (Moran, Harris and Moran, 2007, 11). In regard to religious convictions, the only true Supreme Being I believed existed is the Christian God I worship, whom I assumed held in contempt the ungodly ways of unchristian religions. For such a long time, I erroneously believed that with the exception of Christians, all other believers are doomed for hell. This ethnic and cultural belief that the religion in which one belongs is centrally important (Andersen, 2006) is one of the sub-divisions that promote ethnocentrism. Personally, it was my honest conviction until I realized that every believer thinks likewise of other religions. Remarkable is my said friendââ¬â¢s vehement assertion that Jesse the son of Mary (Christ) was an imposter whose legend deceived people that he was the son of God. Instead, he argues that Mohamed is the true messenger of Allah, the creator of everything. Nonetheless, it will be a self-contradiction for me to consider my system of beliefs as not being the right one and the most appropriate. It is an inconsistence and admission of its falseness, which I consider the height of ideological hypocrisy. I recognize the reality that I belong to a particular culture; and the fact that to fit in my society I must conform to its cultural beliefs and value systems. However, to reconcile my cultural beliefs with other cultural worldviews, I find insight in the principle of cultural relativism by Franz Boas, who argued that ââ¬Å"civilization is not something absolute, but is relative, and our ideas and conceptions are true only so far as our civilization goesâ⬠(Degler, 1992 p 67). Accordingly, peopleââ¬â¢s behaviors, customs and beliefs should be understood in the context of their cultures. When we use the lens of our cultures to understand other cultures, there is always the risk of prejudice and biasness. The problem of ethnocentrism leads to failure of constructive communication and misunderstandings, which in turn causes cultural differences and conflicts (Moran, Harris and Moran, 2007, p 4). Similarly, the theory of functionalism by Bronislaw Malinowski posits that cultures are systems of structures by which different societies function. Each society, therefore, has unique needs which can only be served by its own culture. As such, we can only understand the behavior of other cultures when we take that cultureââ¬â¢s viewpoint, to avoid the misconceptions created by our experiences within our own culture. A research proposal for a small scale qualitative research project on a topic of investigaton of the student own choice - Essay Example as also been observed by scholars that women (mothers) normally would prefer to remarry within 3-5 years after separation and men (fathers) within 1-2 years of separation (Hughes, 2000). When a separation is incurred, children are left with either father or mother as a second child. There are many barriers to stepfamily members that include educational, social, and economic factors (Aronson, 1992). Keeping this in view, the present study aims to assess the perceptions of the members of the stepfamily and examine how these perceptions affect the adjustment to remarriage and stepfamily living. The study also seeks to examine whether there are any associations between the perceptions of child, the biological parent who remarried, and the stepparent. Many studies have been undertaken across the world on stepfamily and related issues. In a significant study undertaken by Wilkes and Fromme (2002) examined whether the themes in the experiences of members in the stepfamily over time is stable or not. Conducted among the adolescents, stepparents, and biological parent from different stepfamilies, the study has observed that areas that remained stable over time and areas of positive change and adjustment. In another study carried out by Cartwright (2003) among stepfamily therapists, the author observes that separated children feel loss of relationship and association with biological parents displaced by the new relationship. This area of knowledge has been empirically researched by many and several theories have been propounded. From the view point of the family systems theory, Berg (2003) addressed a question that whether the relative influence of each parent on adolescentsââ¬â¢ self-esteem and adjustment depended primarily on the ir status as custodial, step-, or non-resident parents, and whether these influences differed for adolescents with stepmothers, compared to those with stepfathers. The study concludes that the perceived association of separated children with

Human Anatomy The body in movement Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words
Human Anatomy The body in movement - Essay Example There are 206 bones in the human body which have roughly 700 muscles pulling on them. This paper aims at using daily human activities to discuss human and anatomy and the body in movement. Skeletal muscles can be said to be the only voluntary tissue in the human body. Every movement that a human being initiates voluntarily cannot take place in the absence of the skeletal muscles. Skeletal muscles perform the function of contracting in order to make various parts of the body to move closer to the bone they are attached to. Most skeletal bone served two adjustment bones that are connected via joints. Therefore, skeletal muscles can be said to be for the purpose of moving parts of these adjacent body bones close to each other. As a result of this involvement it can be said that skeletal muscles are vital for the movement in human beings. This is because most movements in the bodies of human beings always involve movement of bone joints (Palastanga, Field, and Soames 77). Skeletal muscles are not only essential for voluntary movements, but the involuntary ones too. In most cases, skeletal muscles do not manage to make the human body by themselves. The most common occurrence is that they work together in order to make human bodies move in certain ways. When a muscle initiates a certain movement in the human body, it is always referred to as the prime mover. The prime mover always works together with an opposing muscle that has the main responsibility of availing an opposite effect on the same bones. For instance, the biceps brachii muscle flexes the human hand at the elbow, while the triceps brachii muscle opposes these forces at the same point (Palastanga, Field, and Soames 89). However, there are some muscles that act in support of the body movement initiated by another muscle. Such muscles are referred to as Synergists and have the main purpose of stabilizing the body movement. For this

Terrorism - Essay Example asonable at first, promoting the need for inclusion of the state and local law enforcement may not always work effectively in terms of enabling the Department of Homeland Security to manage and prevent the untoward incidence of terrorist attacks. Since the creation of the Department of Homeland Security, it is the Office of State and Local Governments Cooperation and Preparedness (SLGCP) has been officially in-charge of developing the terrorism preparedness plan. (RAND, 2009) Although it is easy for the Homeland Security to develop a universal plan on how to counteract possible terrorist attack, it will remain a challenge on the part of Homeland Security to successfully implement and monitor the adaptation of a universal terrorism preparedness strategy given that the United States has as much as 50 state and 209 local law enforcement agencies. To be able to successfully implement the inclusion of the state and local law enforcement agencies, the Homeland Security will need to invest a large sum of money on the training costs and good quality communication equipments (RAND, 2009). Aside from hiring competitive individuals who will work as secret agents, the use of good communication equipments will enable the newly trained professionals to effectively monitor any possible signs of terrorist attack. By tracking down possible treats coming from terrorist attackers, the U.S. government via Homeland Security will be able to protect the civilians from becoming a victim of violent acts. Other suggested recommendations include: (1) the promotion of intelligence-led policing; (2) community policing; (3) developing a good partnership role with the private business sector; and (4) investing on the use of closed-circuit cameras which will be placed on the streets among others (Safe Cities Project 2006, pp. 3 ââ¬â 5). Corporate codes of conducts have been established and they exist in many MNCs in order to guide the company on the way they operate; thus enabling them to achieve successful business performance in the global competitive market2.The recent study that was carried out by the OECD concluded that most MNCs codes of conduct tend to be highly specific and they deal with the peculiarities of a certain project, location or specific company3. There are different codes of conducts designed to deal with different issues such as industry-specific corporate codes and these guidelines deals with environment; thus labor issues tend to be the most common issues which is being focused under this code of conduct. For instance, many multinational companies in U.S.A such as footwear companies, hardware companies, personal beauty care companies and electronic companies have adopted corporate code of conduct in order to enable them perform their business activities successfully. Asian American Analysis Article Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words
Asian American Analysis - Article Example Social Needs and Issues According to Sharon Lee: "As many Asian American studies scholars have pointed out, Asian Americans are depicted as model minorities but they are also portrayed as foreigners, disloyal to America," (2008, par 10) Lee further elaborates that: "Dual images of Asian Americans as model minorities, people to be praised and emulated and embraced, and foreign threats, people to be watched, monitored, and distrusted, have long been a part of U.S. history." (2008, par 11) How can Asian American students of the Chinese, Indian and South Korea origin reject these types of stereotypes without hurting their academic record It is nearly impossible. Many Asian American students feel that if they are going to break the stereotype, they should and will fail their classes. This will hopefully, in their minds, put them outside the mold and beyond the stereotype, and perhaps earn the trust of other classmates as well. This is something that a counselor and a school must keep in mind when realizing that Asian American failure rates are going up; a big inspiration for this problem is the desire to "fit in" with other students by "getting out" of their Asian American stereotypes.Another important item to consider is the fact that Asian American families generally want their children to be acculturated but not want them to be assimilated. Most of the parents speak their first language in the homes. Many of the parents are immigrants and may not speak English fluently. Therefore, this can cause concerns as far as fitting in and social norms are concerned. This means that these Asian American students may never feel fully accepted, nor may they ever be able to achieve full acceptance as their culture holds... From this study it is clear that the general stereotypes affect Asian Americans psychologically.à If they are not currently successful students, they may be too frightened to ask for help, thinking they will be rejected because of who they are, or ostracized by those within their own ethnic group.à This causes a threat for Asian American students that are failing, because intervention will be key; counselors must understand that these students will more than likely not ask for help. This paper stresses thatà as far as education is concerned, there is a stereotype surrounding Asian Americans that puts quite a bit of pressure on their academic achievement.à Generally, Asian Americans of the Chinese, Indian and South Korean origin. are expected to perform well, and if they do not, they often feel very depressed and are embarrassed to ask for assistance.à à According to Kim and Yeh: ââ¬Å"Moreover, dispelling the Asian American universal academic success myth, the Educati onal Testing Service found that twelfth grade students from six major ethnic groups (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Filipino, South Asian, and Southeast Asian) had significant variations in their educational backgrounds and achievementâ⬠.à ETS also demonstrated how stereotyping has led to the neglect of the development of student services and support for the many Asian American students who are undereducated and have low socioeconomic statusâ⬠.

Nature, representation and value of sexuality in The Buddha of Essay
Nature, representation and value of sexuality in The Buddha of Suburbia by Hanif Kureishi and The Gangster of Love by Jessica Hagedorn - Essay Example Charlie had the additional advantage of the able and valued advice of his ex-guru dad! How simple was the suburban life. Hanif provides an apt description: "We were proud of never learning anything except the names of footballers, the personnel of rock groups and the lyrics to I Am the Walrus.â⬠(p.178) Karim Amir gives the frank self-introduction, befitting the teenager of the 1970s in the suburban London, as ââ¬Å"a funny kind of Englishman, a new breed as it was, having emerged from two old historiesâ⬠(Kureishi, p. 3). Hanif weaves several other stories, around the life of Karim. He creates situations through which Karim is obliged to react the way he reacts. He has no ideal on which he can build his life in a disciplined manner. He gets wrong idols and Karim makes use of them, as a directionless youngster would! Count his misfortunes/fortunes one by one. His dysfunctional family, his best friend with a rebellious daughter, her peculiar Indian-based friend Changez, Charlie who is the object affection, several theatre actors with whom he has opportunistic relationsââ¬âKarimââ¬â¢s sex and sarcasm goes hand in hand. Hanif describes the problems of adolescent Karim Amir growing into manhood. How he learns about himself and the world around him and discovers the operati ve rules of family, work, institutions, society, and culture. Karim Amirââ¬â¢s own schooling proves to be an adventure, quite contrary to the gloomy atmosphere at home. He has affairs with Eleanor, Jamila etc. that provide him much excitement. His companions also teach him sex by example, About Charlie Karim says, ââ¬Å"No, Charlie was the cruelest and most lethal type of seducer. He extorted not only sex, but love and loyalty, kindness and encouragement, before moving on. I too would gladly have exercised these master-skills, but â⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (p.119) Once Karimââ¬â¢s father receives the official sex-license, the possibilities of business in the line are immense! Achieving A Congruence In Organisation Strategy Business Essay
Achieving A Congruence In Organisation Strategy Business Essay This essay first discusses about the importance of achieving congruence between an organisations strategy, structure and human resource management (HRM) practices. The author begins with defining strategy, structure and practices. The example of a software support organisation is used to illustrate the points in this essay; ensues by the outlining of its business objectives and strategies. It strives to be the leading integration software support service provider offering cutting edge service quality and achieving high customer satisfaction. Being in the service industry, the strategies revolve very much around human resource administration. The author subsequently delves into each strategy explaining why there must be congruence in order to accomplish the objectives. The second segment of discussion directs the attention to the relevance and effectiveness of HRM in achieving a competitive edge for the organisation. In the instance of the support organisation, information technology (IT) knowledge and customer service skills are a crucial part of work. Technology is ever-evolving and customers demands intensify in time. With proper management of skill and practices the organisation will be able to adapt well to external and internal changes giving it an advantage over other support organisations. As the conclusion, performance is obtained by systematic interactions and integration among the various HRM practices (Boxall, 2003). HRM has to be aligned to the corporate strategy and structure and this gives the organisation a competitive edge. First and foremost it is good to introduce and define the key elements of the essay. Organisational strategy defines the direction in which an organisation intends to move and establishes the framework for action through which it intends to get there (as quoted in Stone, 2008, p. 13). Organisational structure refers to the organisations framework or design (as quoted in Stone, 2008, p. 34). HRM practices relate to the human resource routines that are undertaken to manage specific skills, values and knowledge of employees (Ennen Richter, 2010). It is important to achieve congruence between these three elements to increase operational performance by meeting the organisational objectives and at the same time promoting achievement of employee goals (Stone, 2008). Advantage occurs when an organisation substantially builds the quality of its human capital and links it to the business and strategy (Boxall, 2003). Hence it can become a leader or winner in the industry. Work situation of a software support organisation will be discussed here. Its strategic business objectives are to be the market leader in integration software support excellence providing services around the globe 247, increase revenue opportunities and endorse effective cost control through: Understanding and growing the employee skills and interests. Retaining the right people by showing appreciation of their contribution. Empowering employees to provide value for achieving customers goal. Achieving high customers satisfaction and keeping them happy. Expanding the organisation in cost effective locations. The business strategy depends profoundly on the work force which is the organisation structure and the management of workers. The corporate business strategy of being the leader in customer service is to be achieved by first of all understanding and growing the employee skills and interests. This is in fact one of HRM practices and activities. Understanding the employee can be done by performing individual appraisal and growing them is a part of HR development and career planning (Stone, 2008). These days, less attention is paid to the persons position or tenure, rather the market value of skills is focused on (Cascio, 2010). Besides skills, their interests need to be taken care of, depending what they are. For example an employee that gets promoted is more committed to the companys goals attainment (Joseph Dai, 2009). A design that focuses on wellness of workers is more likely to be successful in achieving the operational goals. Without proper management of people who are going to run the organisation, its strategic business objectives execution would go the wrong direction. Secondly, the retaining and hiring of desirable skills directly affect the corporate performance (Wei, 2006). HRM strategies have to be aligned fittingly to this in order that the company does not dissipate unnecessary costs hiring new support engineers to replace those who leave the job due to feeling of disapproval. To keep capable workers, it is important for them to feel appreciated for their contribution. Engaging a reward system, incentives-motivated performance measurement is a good way to retain employees. Good organisation coordination can promote a trust environment that enables two way feedbacks between employer-employee (Collins, 2010). Constructive and beneficial feedback has to be acted upon to show that management is receptive to the peoples voice. HR activities such as recruitment and selection should aim to support the organisations strategy of focusing on the customer-employee relationship. Competent candidates ought to be selected for the job to ensure customer obt ain the service they seek from the knowledge workers. Thirdly, the researcher discusses why the empowerment of employee has to be fitted with the right HRM practices and organisational structure. The support organisation has offices in different parts of the world, therefore it is structured in the way that there is a Regional Time Zone Manager who heads the Product Line Manager who manages the Support Managers. The Support Managers deal directly with the Support Engineers. Communication is most of the time vertical and bureaucratic. The author thinks this design complicates the HR practices; for example there will be multiple level approval processes, hence employees are not empowered appropriately. Non-hierarchical decision making is becoming a more popular managerial structure because it is creating added creativity in workplace through proper delegation of work (Joseph Dai, 2009). The author thinks the support organisation could adopt this flat organisational structure. In this way there will be cutback of redundant escalation and reporting processes. Strategic plans can to be communicated immediately to the employees, who carry them out (York, 2010). Managers and employees should share a common understanding of execution plan details without obvious rank barrier. Then the engineers would know the main areas of concern. Keeping customers happy is one of them which will to be discussed next. The fourth strategic plan is to achieve high customers satisfaction. Managing human resource by adopting development-orientated practices is essential to improve the organisations capability in satisfying the customers. IT workers have to be developed regularly to keep up with the latest technological knowledge (Joseph Dai, 2009). Customer interaction effectiveness can be enhanced by communication training and development, hence boosting customer fulfilment. An open and interactive organisational design structure is helpful in building a good customer-support relationship. Customers are free to reach out to the Customer Services Managers for any conflicts or queries that occur during the support process so they get all the assistance they need. Consequently more new customers are attracted to sign up while existing customer stayed satisfied. The company will be able to meet its business objective of generating more revenue from the customers maintenance contracts. Finally, to promote cost effectiveness via the strategic decision to grow the support team internationally, supporting a global set of customers around the clock. One of the initiatives is to have more shifts in lower cost hub, providing customer service remotely through phone and email communication. HRM supports this by recruiting the required support engineers before the shifts start. HR planning of estimating how many workers are needed has to be done carefully to ensure cost efficiency. The planning would have to take into account the existing workers and the time required for the new workers to start contributing to the company (Ahmad, 2000). As the setup activity spans across the globe, the structure has to be in place before execution. The alignment of HRM practices and policies to the organisational strategy, design and structure will significantly increase productivity (Joseph Dai, 2009) especially in the condition where remote supervision is required. The author agrees with the statement One of the aims of HRM is to give an organisation a competitive edge. In fact HRM has to be strategized to help integrate the organisational strategy and polish its structure in a unique way that enhances the overall value to provide a competitive advantage. Human resources management focuses on managing the employer and employee relations and productively use it to achieve the strategic corporate strategy (Stone, 2008). Again in the example of the Support Centre, information technology (IT) knowledge and customer services skills are a crucial part of work. As described above, HRM activity such as training and development could improve these skills which add value to the customer. Customer usually tends to compare the quality of service provided among all other support organisations offering the same services. Distinguished service that stands out is in the advantage to keep the customers. HRM practices and policies describe factors that determine with what skills, values and knowledge organisational routines are implemented (Ennen Richter, 2010). A good HRM system takes care of changes that happen externally as well as internally. External factor such as technological divergence which is ever-evolving requires the attainment of new technical know-how for continuous improvement. With the right resource management, existing hardware and software can be replaced before they get obsolete. New technology can be acquired and utilized to create a better environment for support engineers to trouble-shoot complicated technical cases. Customers are always impressed with fresh ideas and fast resolution time. Transformation that happens internally for example team restructuring will probably affect day to day practices. HR administrative mechanism plays an important role to ensure employees adapt well to the changes. If a formal notification about re-allocation of duties is deli vered, workers will not be caught off guard and can prepare for the change. Productivity would drop tremendously if the various factors are not managed well. HRM that aligns to business strategies controls work activities and direct employees back on track for the organisation to stay competitive. Ennen Richter, 2010, through empirical research concludes that congruence practices, policies, strategy and organisational structure would give firms a competitive advantage over the organisations lacking such fit. The support organisation which is in the service sector covers a huge range of human services and practices. Productivity is best served by systematic interactions and integration among the various practices (Boxall, 2003). The support organisation focuses on human capital but at the same time it wishes to control cost in the most efficient way. Business hubs have been set up in lower maintenance cost locations. To have Asians providing support service to Europeans for example opens to issues such as cultural and expectation differences. HR strategy to hire the best job applicant with strong competencies such as good etiquette, resilience to cultural differences, strong verbal and written communication becomes a significant factor in ensuring the success of the organisati on. The author concludes that the aim of HRM is to achieve congruence between an organisations strategy, structure and its practices for inducing a competitive edge. When the human capital is taken care of, all other aspects such as technology, customer, culture, social and others will be handled appropriately by precise HRM strategy guidelines. The managers design the strategies and model then delegate the tasks. The workers follow instructions to achieve goal. The managers then collect feedback from the workers to continuously improve the system and produce result. Productivity is best served by systematic interactions and integration among the various HRM practices (Boxall, 2003). HRM has to be aligned to the corporate strategy and structure and this relationship gives the organisation a competitive edge. All said about having a system associated with strategies in place and the extensive information available today, the traditional multi-layer organisation charts value is declining ( Collins, 2010). As we move more into the knowledge age, managers role can be made redundant or will be trimmed down. Perhaps as food for thought, one day organisation would prefer workers performing their functional activities without the managers, but through forming multi-domains networked together by technological intelligence. Example Physics Essay
Example Physics Essay The Motion of a Mass Spring System The example of a mass attached to the end of a spring is a powerful tool in physics due to the fact that it is analogous to many physical phenomena. To be able to use this example to elegantly describe other more complex systems it is crucial to first fully understand how this simple system works itself. The force acting on a mass attached to a spring at a given position is given by (Serway, 2003: 437). F= -kx (Eqn 1) This equation may be derived from Newtonââ¬â¢s Second Law of motion, which states that the force on a mass is proportional to the rate of change in momentum. A mass and spring system can be described as a Simple Harmonic Oscillator and there are some fundamental equations that govern the motion of such a system (Serway, 2003: 436). Ãâ°= âËÅ¡(k/m) (Eqn 2) Equation two shows how the angular frequency (Ãâ°=2Ãâ¬*frequency) of an object oscillating due to it being fixed to a spring that is inversely proportional to the mass of the object. k is a constant, known as the spring constant that is defined by the properties of the spring. k can be easily determined experimentally for a given spring by changing the mass attached to the spring and measuring the frequency. Due to the periodic nature of such a system as that which can be described using equations one and two, they are known to be in simple harmonic motion. The motion of a particle over time is described effectively by a cosine wave (Serway, 2003: 436; Hayek , 2003; 562). x(t)=Acos(Ãâ°t+à â⬠¢) (Eqn 3) Equation three shows how this motion can be mapped over time where A is the amplitude of the oscillation, and à â⬠¢ is a term to correct the phase. This can be plotted to show how the mass and spring system will move over time. The figure above shows how a mass on a spring will behave in a frictionless universe while obeying Newtonââ¬â¢s First Law of motion. A useful trait of the Simple Harmonic Oscillator is that the equations for the velocity and the acceleration are easily derived from that of the position equation (Serway, 2003: 436). V(t)=-AÃâ°.sinà ¢Ã à ¡(Ãâ°t) (Eqn 4) a(t)= -AÃâ°Ã ² cosà ¢Ã à ¡(Ãâ°t) (Eqn 5) For brevity the phase term (à â⬠¢) has been omitted from these two equations as it can be assumed that phase is the same. These two equations give valuable insight into the nature of as mass on a spring and how its velocity and acceleration is linked. The interesting thing to note is that velocity is governed by a sine waveform, yet acceleration is dependent on the cosine waveform. What this means is that when the particle on the spring has minimum velocity it will have maximum acceleration, it also means that when the mass is travelling at its maximum velocity it has minimum (possibly zero) acceleration. Realistically however, most situations where a simple harmonic oscillator may be applied will involve a resistive force of some description, such as friction in the case of a mass on a spring. The effect this has on the motion of the mass and the spring system can be seen in the figure below. It is clear to see on the above figure that the presence of friction causes the amplitude of the oscillation to decay over time. This effect is known as damping. In a damped system that has no external force driving the oscillation itself, the rate at which the oscillation decreases is directly proportional to the resistive force being applied to it. The damping force is at its greatest when the particle is moving at its fastest velocity and at a minimum when the acceleration is at a maximum. There are three types of damping in an oscillatory system, underdamping, over-damping and critically damped. Underdamped is where the amplitude of the decay envelope does not decay rapidly. Critically damped systems are the fastest to return to equilibrium and will have a decay envelope that allows one oscillation over the entire damping period and will decay towards zero rapidly during this period. Over-damping occurs when there are no oscillations (as seen in critical damping) however there is an infinite time to return to equilibrium (Hayek , 2003; 567). The equation which describes this damped oscillation is given by: F= -kx-l dx/dt (Eqn 6) Here the original equation for the force is extended by a first order differential term relating to the change in the velocity due to the damping constant l. Equation six is able to be expanded into a more useful form by applying Newtonââ¬â¢s Second Law, which gives: (dà ² x)/(dtà ² )+2DÃâ°_0 dx/dt+Ãâ°_0à ² x=0 (Eqn 7) This equation now contains a first and second order differential equation relating to the velocity and acceleration respectively of the particle. Equation seven looks to be much more complex than that of equation six, however it is now in a considerably more useful form as it allows to see equation six in terms of the angular frequency of the system. D is the damping ratio and is given by D= l/(2âËÅ¡mk) , taking into account the damping coefficient, the spring constant and the mass of the particle. To fully understand the motion of the mass and spring system there must be consideration of the energy within the system. This may be done with the help of some simple drawings. The blue lines indicate the spring and the solid red block with a blue border indicates the mass. From the figures it is possible to imagine stretching the spring, this means that there is a force acting on the mass and if it is held at this stretched point (x) the mass will have a potential energy U. should the mass be released from this point it will have a maximum velocity Vmax and a maximum Kinetic energy KEmax. The total energy in the system at any one point in time is the sum of the potential and kinetic energies. E(t)=KE+U (Eqn 8) E(t)=1/2 mà £Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â¬âv(t)à £Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â¬âà ²+1/2 kà £Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â¬âx(t)à £Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â¬âà ² (Eqn 9) By substituting the formulae for velocity and position (equations three and four) into the energy equation it is possible to simplify this further. E(t)= 1/2 kAà ² [à £Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â¬âsinà ¢Ã à ¡(Ãâ°t)à £Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â¬âà ²+à £Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â¬âcosà ¢Ã à ¡(Ãâ°t)à £Ã¢â ¬Ã¢â¬âà ² ] (Eqn 10) E(t)=1/2 kAà ² (Eqn 11) The elegance of this simple algebra is that for an oscillating mass on a spring the energy in the system at any given point in time is completely independent of time. If there are dissipative or driving affects occurring during the oscillations then the amount of energy in the system will change, however for a closed system this fact holds true. This equation occurs in many areas of physics, for much more complex systems than a single mass on a spring. These equations can be applied to pendulums, resonant electrical circuits (RLC circuits) (Mispelter, 2006: 35) such as those used to detect Radio and TV signals, or even in quantum mechanics and the time independent Schrodinger equation, where it is found that a quantum harmonic oscillator, such as a particle in a potential well (Schrà ¶dinger, 1926: 1054), is one of the few quantum mechanical problems that it is possible to find analytical answers for. If the Hamiltonian for such a system is examined it is shown that its structure is very similar to that of equation nine (Schrà ¶dinger, 1926: 1057; Levitt, 2012: 144). H ÃÅ'ââ¬Å¡= p ÃÅ'ââ¬Å¡/2m+1/2 mÃâ°Ã ² x ÃÅ'ââ¬Å¡Ã ² (Eqn 12) p ÃÅ'ââ¬Å¡ is the momentum operator that forms the kinetic half of the Hamiltonian and x ÃÅ'ââ¬Å¡ is the position operator which calculates the potential part of the Hamiltonian (Schrà ¶dinger, 1926: 1052). It is obvious that the simple classical physics still applies to this quantum system. These are some of the situations where this type of motion is observed and the table shows how the equations are manipulated to fit the system under examination ( Hayek , 2003; 562; Mispelter, 2006: 38; Dirac, 1958: 108; Boylsestad, 2010: 871). In conclusion the mass and spring systemââ¬â¢s motion is elegantly described by some simple mathematics that can be manipulated to suit systems that have external forces acting on the motion of the system. The beauty of this is that the mathematics can then be applied to much more complex systems. References: Boylestad, Robert. (2010) Intrductory Circuit Analysis, 12th edition. Pearson. Dirac, P. A. M. Literary elements used by poe :: essays research papers
Literary Elements in Poeââ¬â¢s Writing à à à à à In the writings of great authors it is easy to pick out the literary elements used by them. Edgar Allan Poe is one of these authors. He makes use of the same literary elements in many of his stories. Three of the most used literary elements are irony, antagonists and foreshadowing. à à à à à Irony is used very often by Poe. Irony is when something occurs that is the exact opposite of how it should be or seem. Irony varies in that it may be displayed through someoneââ¬â¢s actions or an ironic happening. An example of irony in someoneââ¬â¢s action are in the Cask of Amontillado is when Montressor repeatedly seems concerned for Fortunatoââ¬â¢s health, even though his real intentions are to kill him. It also may be considered ironic that Poe named the enemy of Monstressor, Fortunato. Being that Fortunato means fortunate or lucky in Italian, it is ironic that he is very unlucky in that he his buried alive in a wall. à à à à à The Antagonist is also a literary element used by Poe is this story. We see how Forunato so ignorantly and thoughtlessly antagonized the questionably insane Montressor. The consequence for this antagonist was death by dehydration and starvation. à à à à à One of the most common literary elements used by Poe throughout many of his works is foreshadowing. Poe loved foreshadowing what is to come as much as he can. We see him often use little things to foreshadow. Such as, the infamous raven, or the dichromatic beating of the heart within a dead man buried in the floor. In the Cask of Amontillado, we see foreshadowing in the speech of Monstressor and Fortunato. When Fortunato states, ââ¬Å"I shall not die of a mere coughâ⬠, Monstressor enthusiastically agrees with him.

Samsung is segmented according to demographic segmentation, that consists of dividing the market in groups based on different criteria. The most important criterias used by this company is age, income and occupation. Using this criteria they tend to become a leader in technology market as they offer products for each group of customers. Also they are using psychographic segmentation that is the science used to better understand consumers, according to their lifestyle, personality and the main values they have.Another process used by this company is Positive market segmentation that consists of studying the rival goods that are demanded in the market and to compare the quality and price, to understand what the customers need and what products could they insert in the market to satisfy the customer and to increase the confidence of customers in the company. This strategy is one of the strengths of the company as they study the activity of Apple Corporation and other rivals.Using the collected datas they know better what kind of products could they offer to different groups of consumers. The motto of the company is ââ¬Å"Inspire the World, Create the Futureâ⬠, from it we can deduce that the main purpose for them is to satisfy the customers desires and to achieve a high revenue. Another strength that keeps Samsung in the top worldââ¬â¢s brands is the fact that Samsung is totally dedicated to give their customers a wealth of opportunities to rich their full potential. The globalization process for Samsungââ¬â¢s technology businesses started in the early 1980s.So they became a part o f The digital age that has brought new changes and opportunities to global business and Samsung has responded with competitive products and constant innovation. This can be proved by studying the worldwide demand for different goods. For example the worldwide demand for mobile phones was staggering 1. 5 billions in 2011, Samsung accounted for 330 million of those units. This proves the strength of the company as a worldwide leader for different goods as notebooks, mobile phones or digital cameras.Investing directly in activity that spurs economic growth helps Samsung to achieve greater income potential and maintain Samsung brand as one of the most popular in the world. Their position in the market gives them the opportunity to achieve new heights, one of them is their plan of reaching $400 billion in revenue and become one of the worldââ¬â¢s top five brands by 2020. Samsungââ¬â¢s Chairman Lee considers that Globalization is the key for future growth, using this idea he created a new strategy to accelerate Samsungââ¬â¢s globalization through developing a pool of global managers as strategic advisors for Samsung Group.Samsung strategies varies for each trade market. In India their strategy is to be a nationwide distributor and retail presence in the domestic consumer durables market. Also they use different advertising tactics to promote their products, for example Samsung has been associated with the Lakme India Fashion Week for its Mobile Phones. The company used this platform in 2005 to launch a new version of mobile phone the D-500, that became after Worldââ¬â¢s best mobile phone in the Indiam market.Another strategy is the strategic alliances between Samsung and other worldwide recognized organisations, for example in 2007, Samsung established a joint venture with Limo for developing a Linux platform, also they Co-developed for handsets and DVB-H standardization solutions with Nokia. Samsung is also investing money in different companies that co uld help them to provide better technology to consumers, for example investments in shares of US based firm specializing in HDD technology (Integral Peripherals), or investments in operator of telecomunications systems in Chile (Entel).Other strengths of Samsung are the design, effective advertisement and market communication, an actively coming out with newer models and branding as Samsung is ranked 17th among global companies in 2011. A strong point for Samsung is that consists from various business units, the most important is Electronic Industry the one that brings the most revenue for the group (65% in 2011), Engineering and Heavy Industry and Financial Services. When Samsung Electronics rushed its first smartphone to market as a response to the debut of the Apple iPhone, some customers burned the product on the streets or hammered in to the bits in public displays of disaffection. Complaints ranged from dropped calls and heavy touchscreen to frequent auto-rebooting and a lack o f applications. This is weakness for Samsung that they can not keep up with the innovations from Apple and other rivals, even if they try to show the opposite. The biggest threat for Samsung is the global patent battle, between them and Apple,as Apple considers that Samsung copied its iPad and iPhone. Another threat is the fact that Samsung created a big variety of phones into the market so that could lead to a decrease in the demand for new goods in future. Samsung has a different market approach as it offers to customers a much bigger diversity of products. As their previous accomplishments, they look further to explore and develop new activities, as health, medicine, biotechnology. 127 Hours The Movie
After watching and studying the film, reflect on a defining moment in your life. We often talk about character epiphanies (realizations). Use one or two of Ralstonââ¬â¢s quotes as a springboard for your own personal reflection. Write out a response and video tape it. Due Tuesday, October 22nd as well as Journal. (Personal Response Rubric ââ¬â Thoughts and Ideas/Presentation) Quotes from Aron Ralston novel, Between a Rock and a Hard Place ââ¬Å"It's me. I chose this. I chose all of this ââ¬â this rock has been waiting for me my entire life. Iââ¬â¢ve been moving towards it my whole life.â⬠ââ¬Å"Saying farewell is also a bold and powerful beginning.â⬠You'll never find your limits until you've gone too far.â⬠ââ¬Å"How would I behave in a situation that caused me to summon the essence of my character? The tragedy inspired me to test myself. I wanted to reveal to myself who I was: the kind of person who died, or the kind of person who overcame circumstances to help himself and othersâ⬠ââ¬Å"Indeed, it has affirmed my belief that our purpose as spiritual beings is toà follow our bliss, seek our passions, and live our lives as inspirations to each other.â⬠ââ¬Å"Like looking through a telescope into the Milky Way and wondering if we're alone in the universe, it made me realize with the glaring clarity of desert light how scarce and delicate life is, how insignificant we are compared with the forces of nature and the dimensions of space. (â⬠¦) We are not grand because we are at the top of the food chain or because we can alter our environment ââ¬â the environment will outlast us with its unfathomable forces and unyielding powers. But rather than be bound and defeated by our insignificance, we are bold because we exercise our will anyway, despite the ephemeral and delicate presence we have in this desert, on this planet, in this universe.â⬠ââ¬Å"Adversity has the effect of eliciting talents, which, in prosperous circumstances, would have lain dormant. -Horaceâ⬠ââ¬Å"dum spiro, spero -Part of the official state motto of South Carolina. Literally, ââ¬Å"While I breathe, I hopeâ⬠Or more loosely, ââ¬Å"Where there is life, there is hope.â⬠ââ¬Å"That boulder did what it was there to do. Boulders fall. Thatââ¬â¢s their nature. It did the only natural thing it could do. It was set up, but it was waiting for you. Without you coming along and pulling it, it would still be stuck where it had been for who knows how long. You did this, Aron. You created it. You chose to come here today; you chose to do this descent into the slot canyon by yourself. You chose not to tell anyone where you were going. You chose to turn away from the women who were there to keep you from getting in this trouble. You created this accident. You wanted it to be like this. You have been heading for this situation for a long time. Look how far you came to find this spot. Itââ¬â¢s not that youââ¬â¢re getting what you deserve ââ¬â youââ¬â¢re getting what you wanted.â⬠ââ¬â¢ Aron RalstonBetween a Rock and a Hard Place

Determinism vs Free Will Essay
Abstract In this essay I will define determinism, I will also define free will. I will answer question in a dialogue with and imaginary Socrates. In my dialogue I will give clear and conclusive answers and I will use the socratic method. I will also provide examples when possible, or needed. Determinism vs Free Will Socrates: What is the definition of determinism? April: Determinism is a belief in the inevitability of causation. Everything that happens is the only possible thing that could happen (Baumeister,2009). Socrates: What is the definition of free will? April: Free Will is the ability to freely choose one of several possibile alternatives, to make decisions the outcome of which is and cannot be known in advance (Voss,2007). Socrates: Do you agree that every event has an explanatory cause? April: Yes I do, Everything happens for a reason. Socrates: How do you define event? April: I would define even as something that happens. For example like a birth or a wedding. (Solomon,2010) Socrates: How do you define explanatory cause? April: An explanatory cause is the assumption that every event in the universe including our own actions, can be explained and understood. (Solomon,2010) Socrates: Do you agree that every human choice or event has an explanatory cause? April: Yes I absolutely agree, because every human choice and action has an explanatory cause. (Solomon,2010) Socrates: How do you define human choice? April: Human choice is the choice of humans to make a decision that is free of outside influences, because we (people) are the only ones responsible for the decisions we make every day. Socrates: How do you define human event? April: Human events are the things (events) that happens to human beings in their life, like getting married, having children, going to college, and even death. Socrates: Are they different? April: Yes, I think human choice and human event are different, because human choice is the decision you make, and human event is what will happen from your decision. For example you go on a date with this guy (human choice) and then you two fall in love and get married (human event). Socrates: Do you agree that to have an explanatory cause is to not be free? April: No, because that would mean that no human choice or action would be free and as a reaction to that there would be no choices or actions. (Solomon,2010) Socrates: How do you define free? April: Freedom means that we can deliberate about what to do, it means that the future seems ââ¬Å"openedâ⬠, it also entails that we should be praised and blamed for our actions, since we have a choice. (Cuddy,2008) Socrates: Do you think that free will and determinism can coexist in anyway? April: Yes, I believe that free will and determinism can coexist, because even though we have free will and can do what we want, when we want, at the same time our freedom has rules (laws) that are there to guide us and let us know what is right and wrong. (Sturman,2013) Socrates: Is it possible to have external determinism and internal free will? April: Well, I think that maybe it is possible to have external determinism, but not possible to have internal free will, because no such thing as internal or external free will exist, however though external determinism does exist and it refers to the external influences that are out of our control. For example say that a successful and rich movie star has a child, that child will grow up and be a rich and successful movie star also. (Solomon,2010). In conclusion free will and determinism is something that will always be questioned by different people for years to come, but for now here is my beliefs in this dialogue with an imaginary Socrates. I defined determinism and free will and I also answered many questions from Socrates, and inconclusively yes determinism and free will can coexist and i have realized we are not complately free because we have rules (laws) to follow and abide by. For the most part we are the people we are because of determinism and free will. References Baumeister, Ray (2009). Cultural Animal. How we find Meaning in Life. Film Report Essay
Children of a lesser God is a love story about a speech teacher who falls for a beautiful yet distant deaf girl in a small New England school for the deaf, and the obstacles that they face due to their differences. William Hurt plays James Leeds, a renegade teacher with an unconventional approach to education and a resume that includes stints as a bartender and a disk jockey. Upon his arrival, he is warned by school administrator Dr. Franklin (Philip Bosco)not to get creative with his instruction. Naturally, Leeds already has his mind set on his teaching plan and proceeds to play loud rock music in class in order to teach the students to feel the vibrations of the music and get them to try to speak phonetically. But a new element enters his life when he meets the attractive custodian, Sarah Marlee martin. An exceptionally intelligent yet extremely bitter young woman, Sarah is a graduate of the school who has decided to remain there, in the confines of her world of silence; itââ¬â¢s safer for her to be with her own ââ¬Å"peopleâ⬠than to face what she perceives as a cruel and uncaring world. She hardly seems interested in James and will only communicate with him through signing, although she can read lips and even speak a little. James learns from Sarahââ¬â¢s mother ( Piper Laurie) that Sarah was sexually molested as a teenager; this explains why she is so wary of his attempts to form a relationship with her and why she is so full of fear. Eventually, James does get through to Sarah and the two fall in love, although both have to learn new ways to communicate their feelings. Though it seldom resembles the Mark medoff play on which it was based, this directing debut from Randa Haines won an Best Actress Oscar for Matlin, for her first screen performance. In this movie a special education teacher named John goes to work at a school for the deaf. Throughout the movie John acts more as an Audiologist and tries to get all of the deaf students to start speaking. To help the students learn to speak John teaches them to count the beats of music using the feeling of vibrations. With the help of John almost every student learns to articulate at least some words. The relevance in communication disorder in this movie is speaking greatly improves the studentsââ¬â¢ social life and communication ability which improves the quality of their life. Giving them patience and chance to speak in their own language even their deaf.

Influence of Optimist and Pessimist for Success Essay
For example, an optimist will look at a sunset and think, ââ¬Å"Look how beautiful nature is, thank god, life is a wonderful present,â⬠where a pessimist will look at the same one and think, ââ¬Å"The sunset means another day of life passed over and I have one day closer to death. â⬠It is just like an optimist seeing a half-water filled bottle as half full when the pessimist sees half empty. Scientists believe that people with an optimistic attitude towards life can be more successful than pessimists. It is no doubt about that, but people need pessimistic thinking to triumph. Despite everyone knowing optimists are more likely successful, too much optimism or over confidence will lead to negative consequences, even disaster. For example, in ancient times there were three most undoubtedly powerful and prosperous dynasties: Ancient China, Ancient Babylon and Ancient Egypt. Once Ancient China ruled the world. Over a period of 5,000 years the Chinese people developed a unique, self-contained and self-centered society at the extreme eastern end of the Eurasian landmass. The Chinese complacently thought that they did not want what modern science offeredââ¬âgreater technology, power over the natural world, and an improved standard of living. Unlike Westerners, the over-optimistic Chinese felt no need to develop modern science to conquer the natural world. Eventually, as a consequence, Chinese people had been suffering from catastrophic warfare for more than hundreds of years, and there had been not less than one hundred million dead. The only reason why it happened was just because of an unintelligent decision that secluded China from the outside world made by an over-confident and over-optimistic empire. A perfect piece of art or invention, as I have observed, cannot be made simply by those are without pessimistic thinking or critical thinking. Steve Jobs (February 24, 1955-October 5, 2011) was a co-founder, chairman and CEO of Apple Inc. He had such an active professional life that it would not be easy to list all his incredible achievements in one article, but many people knew he had been a over-optimistic loser when the Apple III model came to the public. Jobs thought everything would be going well as he wanted, but truthfully it was not. The over optimism got him fired from the Apple company for eleven years before he finally returned to the Apple company that he established. After that, Jobs became a revolutionary inventor of the digital world. He made legends; he amazingly changed the world. What made Jobs success was that he turned from an optimist to a critical thinker during a low tide of his life. He no longer thought what he invented was perfection and began to criticize his work thousands of times before publishing. Having pessimistic think or called critical thinking makes it possible for people to be as successful as Jobs. However, the information above does not imply that it is wrong for us to be optimists. Optimists succeed more easily in all areas of life. Recent studies show that optimists excel in school, have a better love life, make more money, have better health and live longer. Optimists also do better in the face of stress. Even though optimists bite off more than they can chew, they still end up healthier and happier than pessimists. So the answer of which perspective is correct is neither. What is really important is not which way of thinking is correct but which is more beneficial. You can make a case for each side of the situation. Information about China history from I have learned in history class Information about Steve Jobs from Youtube Steve Jobs speeches The following list from http://www. centreforconfidence. co. uk/pp/overview. php? p=c2lkPTQmdGlkPTAmaWQ9NTY= The benefits of being optimistic include: * Better health * Longer life A happier life * Less stress and anxiety * Successful careers * Better educational qualifications * Better relationships * Better at problem-solving * More resilient in the face of adversity * Cope better with failure The costs of being pessimistic include: * Depression * Dying younger * Inertia in the face of adversity * Having a lower immune system * Suffering increased ill-health, both physical and mental * Not performing well at work * Failure when faced with crucial situa tions * Poorer relationships Even when things turn out badly, pessimists donââ¬â¢t feel good about making the * More fun and worthwhile. Peopleââ¬â¢s Attitude towards Life Outline Thesis: It is no doubt that optimists are more likely to succeed, but success cannot be without pessimists. Opinion 1: the overoptimistic attitude will lead negative consequence. For example ancient China Opinion 2: the pessimistic thinking or called critical thinking can help you succeed. For example Steve Jobs Conclusion: we cannot totally deny the benefit brought by optimistic attitude.

Wonderfun plc Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2000 words
Wonderfun plc - Essay Example To analyse the current position of Wonderfun, the trends in financial ratios have been seen and the performance of company with other companies has been compared by taking the industry averages. Based on analysis, few recommendations have been provided to the company and investors. The financial ratios analysis has shown that Wonderfun PLC has been performing above than market average during the period 2005-2008. However, the performance of company has been declining slightly from 2005-2008. The year 2009 appears to be a tough year for the company, as its profits have reduced and debt and liabilities have increased. Still, the company has paid the same dividend in 2009, as it has paid in 2008. Moreover, Wonderfun has also pursued expansion strategy in 2009, which have enhanced the liabilities of the company; however, the sales of company are improving after this expansion. It has been recommended to the company that it can improve its performance in coming years by reducing its operating expenses such as selling and distribution costs. Moreover, it has been suggested to investors that Wonderfun is still a good company to invest in because of its excellent past performance, declining industry performance in 2009 (which also affected company) and potential of increasing revenues because of expansion strategy. Various groups need financial information and the nature of their uses also varies. The main groups of users may include owners of the company, managers, prospective owners, banks or lenders, suppliers of materials, government bodies, related industry regulatory authorities and employees or unions (ACS). Australian organisations must adopt sustainability reporting in the Essay
Australian organisations must adopt sustainability reporting in the 21st century - Essay Example Sustainability reporting in Australia is voluntary, meaning that the organizations are not bound by law to report it in their financial statements. So, the purpose of this essay is to emphasize on the fact that Australian companies should adapt sustainability reporting in the present century and to establish why and how the organizations should meet the requirements of sustainability reporting and how will it be profitable to them. Sustainability reporting involves the display of a companyââ¬â¢s economic, social and environmental performance and its impacts through the companyââ¬â¢s annual reports. There are various reasons as to why a company should report its performance. Sustainability reporting helps in establishing a stronger trust relationship with the stakeholders. The stakeholders view the company as being honest about their actions and performance, thus it strengthens the image of an organization as being sincere and considerate towards the environment it operates in. The key towards establishing strong relations is not to report the good part only but the discrepancies as well; it leads the stakeholders like employees to trust their employers and execute hard work to enhance the performance of the company (Blackburn, 2007). Such actions give the sense of legitimate reporting of corporate activities. This ensures acceptance by the key stakeholders of the company especially towards the management decisions and activities that may be sometimes seen as of compromising nature (Schaltegger, Bennett and Burritt, 2006). By incorporating sustainability reporting into the strategic designing of an organization, a company can link all its operations to achieve those goals that are expected of it. Various operational benefits can also be derived through implementing sustainability reporting. The various costs that are incurred because of the irresponsible use of materials

Analysis - Research Paper Example This day, terrorists attacked America using four hijacked planes, which they ran into major buildings in the United States, i.e. The World Trade Center, The Pentagon, and Shanksville field, causing great havoc of property and humanity. The countryââ¬â¢s national flag flies at half-mast in respect to all those people who lost their lives during the 9/11terror attack. This takes place in all American homes, White House and all government buildings across the world, i.e. embassies of the United States (Crotty 64). Furthermore, all American citizens collectively take the moment of silence at the same time, i.e. exactly at 8.46 AM, marking the moment when the first plane hit the WTC (World Trade Center). Consequently, some communities who suffered the most from the attack hold prayer meetings and special church services. Those personally affected during the attack and those who lost their loved ones or got injured, lay flowers where they buried their loved ones or visit memorial center s, such as the Ground Zero. However, this is not a national holiday and therefore businesses and schools do not close, neither do public transit systems change their operating schedules. What most organizations do is to take some time out of their busy schedules to hold prayers for those who suffered. This is in commemoration of the Patriots Day in the United States, as clearly outlined in the three texts discussed below (National Commission on Terrorist Attacks 464). Describing and Analyzing a Poem by Adam Zagajewski Entitled ââ¬ËTry to Praise the Mutilated Worldââ¬â¢ A Polish national Adam Zagajewski wrote a poem ââ¬ËTry to Praise the Mutilated Worldââ¬â¢ in Polish language. Another author, Clare Cavanagh translated it from Polish to English. It was issued on September 24, 2001. The poem refers to America as the world, mutilated after the attack by terrorists on the 11 of September 2001. After the attack, the rosy features of the country changed from blossoming to perp etual failure. Several excerpts from the poem describe how parts of the country and the economy were undergoing successful development and growth, until the fateful attack brought them to a standstill. Thousands of young and capable men and women lost their lives during the attack. The citizens with a lot of potential to give back to the society succumbed to injuries during the attack that transformed them to weaklings and dependants (Mills Vii). The poet uses metaphors and synonyms in presenting America before the attack. The poet uses themes such as wild strawberries to paint a vivid picturesque of America to the readers. He outlines the impacts of the attack using touching phrases, such as abandoned homesteads as their owners run away to exile, stylish ships and yachts at sea in salty oblivion of the dangers awaiting them, refugees who had nowhere in particular to go to in escaping the wars at home. This is a mutilated world and a complete contrast of the original blossoming and successful world where people sang joyfully and music flared. The author equates the terror attack as the main cause of mutilating the world (Mills Vii).
